This sounds like a brake issue. Have a shop remove the rear wheels and inspect for damage in/around the brakes. Rear axle bearing failure is usually noted by very gradual humming noise that escalates with mileage.

New brakes have been put on and they did not find a problem. The noise has been going on for about a year. This is not the only car that I have so don't drive every day but it still runs really good so I want to get this problem fixed. What else could it be.
