Timing chain symptoms

They're usually composite plastic secured to a metal bracket, and the composite may have separated or disintegrated, leaving the chain to make direct contact with the metal bracket, resulting in the sounds you're hearing. There is a risk of metallic shavings being deposited throughout the engine because of the metal-to-metal contact and this could further complicate any repair attempts.
