Why does the car get very hot and smells like burning plastic or oil?

When driving the car for about a half hour or more, the front sides along the edges of the hood get very hot and it smells like burning oil or plastic. We just got this car two days ago. We noticed the smell then but we thought it was because we had the AC on, but we have been driving with no AC and it still happens. We have 5 days to return it if we change our minds. Is this an easy repair or should we return it and avoid the hassles?
