MALFUNCTION indicator lamp is there to warn you of potentially hazardous problems with the emissions system on you car. It may be something simple or harmless to the engine , short term , but many items if ignored , will only get worse. Go to a local Autozone or other parts store and ask them to 'read the codes' and post them here for more info.
