mechanic said they checked wiring and seemed ok, recently had wired for trailer hitch could this cause the issue? Is it save to try higher amp fuse?

You got a short to ground, must be found. Do not install higher amp fuses, it will damage your wiring system. Follow wire diagrams until short is found.
