What is your question?
I have a 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid that my roommate used for over a year while I was stationed in Germany. During that time, he only had one oil change done about 8 months ago. We recently checked the oil level, and it doesn’t register on the dipstick. The car won’t start at all. Could low or no oil have damaged the knock sensor? Also, how much does it typically cost to replace the engine knock sensor on this vehicle? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, this is Bo, an auto expert on RepairPal's Car Genius team! Yikes, no oil on the dipstick is a tough situation. To your question, low or no oil doesn't usually damage the knock sensor itself. That sensor listens for engine knock, which an oil-starved engine would definitely produce before, well, potentially seizing up. The bigger concern, and likely why it won't start, is severe internal engine damage from that lack of lubrication. The knock sensor would just be reporting the bad news. Replacing a knock sensor on that Sonata Hybrid will vary depending on where you are. Feel free to utilize RepairPal's free online estimator to get an idea of parts and labor cast. However, with no oil showing and a no-start, the priority is assessing the engine's overall health. That no-start situation points to something much more serious than just a knock sensor issue, likely caused by the oil starvation. Get oil in it ASAP (if you haven't) and have a mechanic check for major engine problems.
