It started grinding when I shift. Now I can only shift from 3rd to 4th. Just out of the blue. What could cause it?

It's still the same with the car on or off. I can't get the shifter to go over far enough to find 1st. It only has 3rd, 4th, & neutral. There's no getting it into 1st, 2nd, 5th, or reverse. I have to slip the shit out of the clutch to get it to take off in 3rd.
