Sounds like engine performance is challenged likely due to a fuel, spark or air intake concern. Engine timing and compression is less likely a culprit, as it "starts up fine" at some point. Testing must be performed when the problem is occurring.
Had the problem where it would hesitate to start, then start and stay at zero rpm. id restart and it would go to normal but felt weak. stalled twice and no check engine light. I changed Crankshaft sensor which was $87 and took me 10 minutes but I have a car jack. you can watch a YouTube video on how to do it.
Hi All, I have the same issue. THe car makes a choking sound when you try to start it, it finally starts, the RPMs remain at zero they don't bounce up at all. I have been through this at least twenty times. When this happens, I cannot accelerate, it takes 30-40 seconds to get up to 10mph then to 15mph. Cars are honking at me as I am barely moving. I left my car with dealer for a whole month. They could not duplicate, it is random and not attributable to weather or anything consistent. I finally learned a workaround where when I start my car and it does do this, I turn it off and turn it back on again. It starts fine, rpms are moving around like normal and car functions normally. Hopefully my experience can add to your case and we can figure out what is wrong. I have a 2013 Elantra with 62k miles so it is still within the 10-yr warranty and would like to have this duplicated or diagnosed to fix it before the warranty is up.
I have a 2013 Hyundai Accent. My car just started doing this today. It had trouble turning over and once it did the rpm gauge didn't move. I didn't have trouble accelerating but it felt sluggish. Did you find the problem with yours?
Did you find out the problem yet. My car does the same thing. Need to take to dealer which will cost me a fortune!
My mechanic didn't get any engine codes or transmission codes. He saw a communication code on can bus to ECM for ABS System. Have to bring to dealer. There r also 2 recalls on my car which I'm having fixed. Could a recall issue be the reason for my car trouble?
Been searching about this for some time. I have a 2014 Elantra. I don’t know if the two are related, but first problem is the car will stall while going slow, check engine, oil and battery lights all go on at once. This seems to happen more often after an oil change. Second is the issue here, it’s happened three times. First car will have trouble starting. It will take several tries to start. Then it feels like it wants to stall, wont accelerate, rpm’s not moving. When I pull over, shut it off and start it again, it will start and run like normal again. When my mechanic ran a check, it simply said something happened but it corrected itself, doesn’t say what happened though. No one can seem to figure it out or re-duplicate what is happening.
It sounds like the crankshaft sensor. Try changing it out. $20 for the part, a small ratchet, 10 mm socket and a flathead screwdriver is all you need for the job. Very easy fix. My wife's 2015 Elantra was doing the same thing (low engine idle, rpm gauge not working on startup). If the sensor is faulty it's not going to send the right information to the car's cpu when you crank it up. The sensor tells the cpu what position the crankshaft is in so it can send the right amount of fuel to the injectors. That would be the reason why you're getting a sluggish engine. I changed hers out and now it purs like a kitten. Hope this helps.
Wow, you described perfectly the same issue I have and figured out restarting again works fine. This happened when I have the ECO mode on and so I turned it off. The taking some time to restart in the morning still happens and then I have to pay attention that the RPM gauge is working or it will eventually shut off when idle. I have a 2012 Elantra.
I made an account on this site, just to reply to you. The crankshaft sensor was 100% my cars issue. 2015 Hyundai Elantra, no RPM gage, weird starting as if the battery was dead, driving and losing the rpm gage and ability to shift gears; all the same issues others listed, I had. I was able to get my sensor replaced with the help of a neighbors car jack and stands, there are videos online how to do the replacement. Took me 2 hours from start to finish. I don't work on cars, never even been under a car until I replaced that thing, if I can do it, anyone can. TLDR: Replacing my 2015 Hyundai Elantra crankshaft sensor fixed all my issues!
My husbands 2013 Elantra is having the same issues. Did your check engine light come on?
Did you ever find out what was wrong?
Thank you for the fix… Just wanted to add. Symptom: Car turns on. No power/Will not rev up [My issue] · Battery was bad (No cranking power) · Crankshaft Position Sensor (Bad) Took about 40 mins to replace the Battery and Sensor.
Thank and will look into that ASAP.
I have a 2011 hyundai elantra and the exact same thing you are saying...will stall at times and battery, check engine, and oil light all (3) only come on...no rmps until restart...please let me know if you found a solution. Thank you
