What is your question?
Hi. I have had the classic piston slap get louder in my car only because it's colder outside. I've been disputing with Hyundai about getting my engine replaced under warranty, but now I'm starting to wonder if it's even worth it. The noise goes away once the engine is warm and the car drives fine, but of course there's always the concern that the engine will fail unexpectedly. Is it worth it to get a new engine? I hear that often times engine replacement can cause other problems to pop up especially with transmission, so I'm wondering if I should just deal with the car as is. Any advice?

Hi this is Dusty, I'm one of the auto experts on RepairPal's Car Genius team. The piston slap noise you're experiencing is a well-known issue with some Hyundai engines. While it's common that the noise often goes away once the engine is warm, there's still a risk of unexpected engine failure. If the car is otherwise in good condition and you plan to keep it for several more years, engine replacement might be worth it. I would also consider the cost of a new engine against the benefit of purchasing a more reliable vehicle or to help the resale value with a prospective buyer.
