my engine shut off and now it wont start after I heard a rattling sound

I felt the radiator smelled like it needed water I put some in it was hot I know cause the water bubbled back on me when I got it calmed down I put the cap back on started the car and proceeded home when I heard a sort of rattling sound I went about another three or four miles and the engine just died and would not crank back up oh there was a leak earlier but it wasn't large it was water

Hello, rattling sounds can be the sounds of internal engine damage or concerns. Way too difficult to tell from here -- you'll have to have it evaluated first hand by a local shop. Highly concerning that you had this rattle noise and an apparently overheating vehicle.
