Is there any warning signs that the timing belt is about to break? Does anyone get 100k miles without changing the belt?

Hyundai recommends replacing the timing belt at the 60,000 mile service on this engine, so if you have 100,000 miles, you are very lucky. You may hear a slapping noise from the belt area if the belt is loose, but generally there are no other signs that the belt is about to break. If you replace the timing belt before it breaks your looking at $300 - $400, something like that. If it breaks, it can be $2000 - $3000, depending on the engine! Get it changed soon!
If it is an interference engine the belt is warranted for 5 yrs or 60K miles. If the belt breaks you will likely damage or destroy your upper engine ($1k to $3k to fix). Call Hyundai to verify but you can have any mechanic do the work for you as long as they use a Hyundai Genuine belt. You then get another 5yr or 60K mile warranty.
