what does it mean to unstake the rear hub nut on a 2005 elantra?

Where the nut threads on at the threads the edge of the nut has a "stake" that holds it from backing off after tensioning. Look hard, you will see it. sometimes it is just where someone has used a brass hammer and just tapped to flatten the surface.
