What is your question?
I was told I needed a new transmission. The auto shop put a new(used) one in. I picked it up and started to drive away and doing the same thing. It's like it's stuck in 3rd gear. Slow moving but still revs 3-4000 at 60 mph. I turned around took it back the mechanica said he would have to get another transmission supposedly put another transmission in and then it seemed to drive ok. Now 4 months later it is doing the same thing. The mechanic is telling me the transmission place wants him to replace the speed sensor and if it's not that then it is the processor. Does this sound right? My gut is telling me something is not right here. Did I not even need a different tranny? PLease help.

It's hard to know what is going on here, this mechanic seems to be guessing and I'm not sure how much actual diagnosis they're performing. I would want all the diagnostic info from the previous and current repair attempts, and I would probably get a second opinion before replacing any parts. Is this a transmission shop?
I had a 1997 chevy 1/2 ton PU truck that the altenator went bad in. The first thing that happened was the tranny would not shift correctly. I thought my transmission was going bad, but it was the alternator. I understand if the on-board computer isn't getting the correct amperage, The transmission, among other things, will malfunction. Hope this helps some.
it was likely, ever only the speed sensors. Do not go back to that same mechanic. Search your faults online and you will likely come to the right answer. Find more then five sites with the similar solutions and you can be fairly certain you're on the right track. The speed sensors in this situation cause a ton of shifting errors, from sticking in gear to hard clanking/shifting. To find out if your transmission is failing, you need only look at the fluid on the dip stick. If the fluid is red/pink you're likely ok, where as if it's black or has any amount of contamination in it, you would then be looking at a failing transmission. I'm skeptical that the mechanic in your situation didn't at least know to replace the sensors. Seems like he totally missed the easy fix, searching for the big bucks. I wonder if he even changed anything.
Yes it is and they specialize in classic cars. Scary..I wouldn't let this guy go near my very expensive, resored vehicle. They just called and said they repaired it by replacing the speed sensor. I have requested a detailed service ticket for everything they have done to my vehicle. I feel like I may have been scammed. Is there a way to tell if a different tranny was ever even put in?
A person that is experienced with these vehicles can look at it and determine if the transmission has ever been replaced. Especially if they used an aftermarket remanufactured transmission. If they can provide you with the information and it shows the diagnostic codes stored in the transmission and engine control modules now and from the previous attempts, then you may have a case against this shop. The real shame is that there are a lot of unqualified "mechanics" out there that are in way over their head when diagnosing these types of problems. Many people think shops are "intentionally" ripping them off when it can be pure incompetence. Not knowing all the details these are observations and not accusations against this shop, of course. What is your restored vehicle?
