I have 97 accent GL I was driving through W.Va. in the mountians with no problems and the transmission started slipping and now it only will mov in low 1 and low 2 as soon as i shift into drive the engine starts revving to about 55oo rpm's then i have to stop and turn off the motor put it in park wait about 1 minute start it back up and i can get it to move only in low gears for a couple miles and it starts slipping again does anybody know what the problem could be

Does not sound too good. Check your fluid level...But sounds like you may need transmssion. How fluid smells may tell alot.
Coolant temperature sensor does help control some torque converter and shift point. It's inexpensive part would give a shot. Part also helps computer control some fuel injection, timing and egr functions. When part malfunctions should put up a check engine light- have checked at Autozone if so. If not change your fluid and hope for best.
Check to make sure your accelerator cable isn't stuck in a faulted position under the hood or that something hasn't caught. I hit the gas once hard on one of my vehicles and the cable wedged in an awkward spot.
smells kinda burnt and darker than usual
I hate to say it but your likely going to have that transmission overhauled or replaced.
