how do I repair left stop light that does not work after replacing bulb?

I don't mean to ask a "simple" question like this, but it is quite easy to obtain a bulb that fits and install it, only to find the filament in the bulb will not light because it's not properly referenced to the socket because it's not the exact needed bulb.
