Hi There, This is about rack and pinion steering

I hit a median a little over a year ago and had major repairs ($6,000) done to the car. Like transmission replacement. A different mechanic just told me the rack and pinion steering is cracked and will need to be replaced. Could this be a problem with the repair work or wear in tear in a year's time? Not sure what to do.
