Element is overheating when car idles.

car has 170,000 miles. has had regular oil changes and no problems now that it is hot and running air conditioner have noticed temperature gauge going up when car idles

What makes this problem better or worse?

stopped when hot and running air conditioner/ temp goes down when car is moving
