Happened once today. Noticed smoke coming from passenger side under hood. Had just shifted from reverse to drive after idling in park for a minute. Had been driven strenuously for a few hours. On and off, delivery driving. No overheating warnings came on and the temperature gauge was on the cool end of halfway.
How long has your 2006 Honda Element had this problem?

Hello, smoke may come from a few different sources. A coolant leak may be present, causing steam. Engine oil, transmission fluid or power steering fluid may be leaking onto hot engine compartment components causing smoke.
