Why does the start engine button not work sometimes?

Sometimes the car doesn’t start when I push the engine start button, but all the idiot lights come on. The car will start after I’ve waited a few seconds, but sometimes it takes several tries. The position of the steering wheel doesn’t matter. The battery was recently replaced. Doesn’t matter if the radio is on or off. No leaks. There’s a clicking noise.
