2014 Honda crv makes a noise like the timing chain slapping against the timing chain cover only when started cold

So, there are two possible noises here. Yes, the VCT solenoid is known to make a cold start rapping noise that goes away. This can be repaired by replacing the solenoid. However, the second noise could be timing chain noise. Under certain conditions, I've seen 50,000 - 100,000 mile CR-V 2.4L 4 cylinder engines have "stretched" timing belt, mostly due to extended oil change intervals. It's so important to change the oil every 5,000 miles or so -- no matter what the "A" and "B" minder service indicator says. The extra love and attention to your engine will pay dividends. However, you could have noise if you've gone 8,000 - 11,000 miles between oil changes -- even though the minder said to do that. Sad but true. Service the VCT solenoid first for the noise, but if it continues you could need timing chain work. www.repairpal.com/repair-shops See that link for a shop near you.
