A.C. & dash control panel

What is your question?

My A.C. went out--no pop/bang/whimper, just suddenly was blowing hot California air instead of cool California air. Mechanic says that there's no problem w/ the freon and that the compressor seems to be in good shape--he thinks the culprit is the control panel on the dash--a $500 part (minimum). Before I drop the bucks, I'd like to be sure that is indeed the problem...Can someone suggest ways I could figure this out?

The control panel is really just a complex switch, which means that it sends a signal to turn on the compressor. This signal is sent to the Engine Control Module which then determines if the compressor should be turned on. If the technician has checked and found that the control panel is not sending the proper signal to turn on the compressor, then I would say it's OK to replace it. However, I'm not sure they have checked this as thoroughly as they should. Ask how they verified the control head is defective, if they don't sound sure of themselves, don't replace anything and have another shop look at this, I suggest the Dealer, they probably see this often and know what to look for.

Thank you, BretB for taking the time to respond to my question--I particularly appreciate how you made this part of the a/c system understandable to me and gave me something to follow up w/ the technician about. He also suggested that I go to the Dealer, so I'm going to follow this advice--I guess I need to hear things twice!
