could the need for a new rear differential because from a rear end collision?

This is definitely possible. Even a seemingly minor collision could push a drive axle and damage the rear differential.
I would say the possibility is low. In all the rear/side and under body impacts I have seen, I have never had to repair or replace a differential. Of course anything is possible but in this case my experience is that it would be unlikely to see damage from a rear end collision.
