Hello, I have been operating the parts and service departments of Honda dealerships for over 11 years. I can tell you it's extremely rare to have a CR-V transmission in any year fail. I would ask to ensure you have followed maintenance requirements. The fluid should be changed approximately every 30,000 miles -- by draining what comes out of the drain and then refilling it, about 3-4 quarts. I would not recommend "shifting manually" ever, unless you needed to for safety reasons. It's impossible to say why you were affected in both vehicles, other than by looking at driving habits and the maintenance suggested. I would recommend troubleshooting be performed to ensure that repairs are not possible. In some cases, the pressure switches for different gears may fail electrically and need to be replaced. Good luck. www.repairpal.com/repair-shops
