will it hurt the engine if i don't replace the cannister/valve on the emissions?

the engine light is on and the diagnostic test at the honda dealer said i needed this cannister and valve replaced..for $500...but if it doesn't hurt the engine, and i live in a county that doesn't require emission testing..why bother??

If the canister is allowing fuel vapor into the intake the air fuel ratio will be richer than it should be and could in the long run shorten catalytic converter life.Its hard to say with out seeing scan tool information to see Air/fuel ratio, fuel trim and O2 sensor figures.
