99 CR-V recently had the lower ball joint sheered through above the control arm and had shown no significant wear prior. The wheel then went 90 degrees to the left and had severe tire and cv shaft damage. Is Honda liable as this was an original part? I've seen them wear out but never sheer like that. how common is that type of failure?

It is very common for ball joints to break and cause this kind of damage. Working at a repair shop I warn people all the time when the ball joints start to wear and have play that they NEED to be replaced. Honda would not be liable for this at all.
