Airbag system not working

I have been having trouble with the airbag light coming on in my car intermittently. I recently had my car battery changed, and I thought it was due to this, but the issue did not resolve over a few months. I brought the car in to be checked and a diagnostic revealed that the airbags needed to be replaced. These airbags bags were not recalled and I had no accidents. I'm having trouble understanding how the airbags could go bad after 6 years when I never had any accidents. I thought they usually last a lifetime of the car. So my question is what could cause the airbags to go bad?
