Check the ground cable on both ends. there also should be an engine to body ground. If all of that is ok. Then you might have a short or the solenoid on the starter might be bad. Take the starter off and connect it up with a pair of jumper cables. If the starter runs and doesn't get hot , then your starter is ok. Before you do that though, if you have a test light, check to see that you have current to your starter. If you don't , then you have a break somewhere in the circuit going to your starter.
