My check engine light went on took it to get checked it's the VTEK NEEDS TO BE REPLACED

My check engine light went on I can't get to the auto parts to get put on this machine to find out why the check engine light is on and it is the VTEK it needs to be replaced One gentleman at one auto parts told me that it can be a sensor and when I took it to another auto parts he said it was the same thing a good VTEK but some other problems HIGH CAR MILES
What makes this problem better or worse?
Wasting a lot of gas and when irxcellerate it hesitates
