Yes, a check engine warning light will clear automatically after a certain amount of key cycles if the problem is not occurring any longer. For example if you have a gas cap that is not sealing properly but it is now sealed well - the light that once came on to indicate that there was an evaporative emissions system leak will now clear after a period of time when there is no leak any longer.
