Could my axle not be pushed in all the way?

My axle broke in my car and I had it replaced but my car still moves while in park. When I put it in gear it makes a awful grinding and clunking noise but won’t go anywhere. There are no lights popping up on the dash. I have ideas of what it could be but not sure. The axle may not be pushed in all the and I think the snap ring broke. What do you think?
