Can I still drive my car if the engine light is on code P0780

It could be as little as a shift solenoid or up to replacement of the transmission. my friend bought a 2002 Accord around 13 years ago and her transmission started shifting like it was slipping. she drove it but didn't really want to,so she ran it back to the dealer,they said the transmission needed replaced at $4000.00?
