If the CV boot is torn and grease is coming out then the noise you describe is likely the joint on your CV axle. When you turn, the CV joints on the inside wheel get extra stress and they can wear out even before the boot does. The classic telltale sign is a sound of "crackling" or "clunking" when you turn. Replace the CV axle and it should go away. Occasionally I've caught a torn boot before the joint deteriorates and for at least some cars there were special "quick boots" you could use to replace a torn one. Now everyone I talk to at the parts store looks at me like I'm crazy when I bring it up. Wheel bearings will often make noise as well, but it is somewhat different from what a CV joint will make and it occurs under different circumstances.
