Steering shaft wont move into firewall

Just replaced the pitman arm at home.now I can't get the steering box to line up with the bolt holes in the frame...the steering shaft seems to be holding about two inches from being able to line it up. I can't seem to push the upper intermediate shaft back in towards the firewall. Why? I
