Shifter will just raise and lower without engaging in any gear

Does it ever get in gear? If not, the shift linkage is probably broken, or the bolt connecting the shift linkage to the transmission shift shaft has come loose/off. Look under the car where the shift linkage connects to the transmission, have someone shifting it (E brake on, engine off!!), and see if the transmission shift shaft is moving. If it isn't, check the steering column end to make sure it is connected.
