it seems like the hose that is on the bottom goes straight to the water pump not the thermastat

But the top does! It doesn't cost that much to have a repair shop do this job... Can go to YouTube and search for a video to see it being done then decide... It's not that complicated but if not done right can cost much more than you will ever save by diy!
