there also is gas in the air filter. is this due to the distribuiter and spark plugs and wires.

Check engine / service engine soon light should be staying on - that indicates the onboard processor has received a signal from one of the sensors that a problem exists in one or more of the operating systems and has stored related trouble codes .. We need those trouble code numbers before we can answer you questions with any certainty.
