TURN THE CAR ON AND WHILE ON IDLE YOU TAKE OFF THE BLACK BATTERY TERMINAL AND IF IT SHUTS OFF IT'S YOUR ALTERNATOR THAT NEEDS REPLACING AND IF IT STAYS ON THEN IT'S THE BATTERY'NEED A NEW ONE"
Stop by your local Napa store and have them load test the battery and at the same time they can test the charging system
I have a 2006 Envoy with the same problem. I have changed the alternator and the battery and still just had 10 amps on a amp meter. come to find out I have no voltage on the field wire ( the two wires on the voltage regulator) I havent found the reason yet Im still looking for a wiring schematic.
Just had this same issue. Started the car voltage read charging at 14.9v. When the light came on it was reading 11.5v. Battery is new and reads 12.4v without cables attached. The alternator tested OK at the auto parts store. However, THIS WAS A FALSE READING. We replaced the alternator, which also has a built-in voltage regulator, and all is working. Charging at 14.85v and all is perfect. If you have only tested the alternator at an auto parts store, do not go by that. Replace it.
