The air conditioning compressor will engage when a setting that activates air conditioning is selected inside the vehicle -- which is achieved by using most selections, as the compressor acts to dehumidify the interior even If hot air or defrost settings are chosen. If there is no refrigerant in the system, or an insufficient charge, the compressor may not activate. If there is an issue with the compressor clutch or coil, it may not turn on. If there is a cycle switch issue, the compressor may not turn on. Getting hot air in the cabin is not necessarily an indication that the compressor is not working; instead, there could be a concern with the temperature blending functions of the climate control system, which would require evaluation.
