Are any special tools needed to remove rear wheel drums?

What is your question?

While attempting to replace the rear brakes on my vehicle I got to a point of removing the wheel drum and encountered extreme difficulty in doing so. Ispent hours trying to remove the drum and just finally gave up. What could possibly be the problem?
