replace transmission?

What is your question?

Suddenly the transmission is slipping and not shifting. Our mechanic says it needs replacement. But that would cost approx. $1765, and the bluebook value for the car is much less. On the other hand, we need it, and aren't sure we can afford to buy a "new" car. What should we do?
