car will go into reverse but not drive..is this a torque converter issue

No, not a torque converter, otherwise it wouldn't work in any gear. You'll want to get this looked at by a transmission shop so they can perform a few tests to determine what is wrong. I suggest looking for an ATRA shop near you: http://bit.ly/ATRA_Info
