lights went out now dark in this one area rest of instument panel OK how complicated - just replace bulb(s)? any special cautions? OK for DIYer? How much would independent shop charge?!?

Yes, the bulbs can be changed separately. The instrument cluster is not very difficult to remove or time consuming. Shop time should be an hour labor or less if you do not want to attempt it yourself.
Given the date on this post, I suspect you've resolved this one way or another. I just repaired mine, and as best I can tell, it's not a total DIY job. I removed my cluster and sent it to Southeast Instrument Repair in Richmond, VA. (http://www.instrumentclusters.com/) For $235, they repaired it and paid UPS both ways. Outstanding turn around. I put it into UPS on a Wed. and they recv'd it Fri. noon. By Monday, they had it back to UPS, and I got it back on Wed. Works like new. Notes said they had to repair display power circuit and replace a bad display. Biggest problem I had was figuring out how to get the steering column/cluster cover off.
