My Tuarus is eating up gas like crazy and it used to run at an average of 1500 rms and now I notice it runs more like 2500-3000 (it has over 120,000 mi on it)

There is a recall for this issue. maybe you got it by now. I have an '03 sel taurus wagon 24 v... I have owned it since 2004 and 12,000 miles. About three years ago (2012) I received a recall ( how they tracked me through two moves and two states was impressive) to replace the throttle cable!!! I was floored that the dealer fixed this problem that I had experienced too... fast idle the would not go below 2000rpms unless you braked the car . it was really challenging driving down a hill or pass... it just would not slow down on its own. Did not let others drive the vehicle then as it took special attention and anticipatory driving to safely drive this car. I had 187,000 miles on this car and the recall was $0 cost to me... SWEET!!! Now I had a car that idled properly and was a joy to drive again... Still driving the wagon daily although here in OR I don't put on so many miles these days... Just shy of the 200,000 mark and its going strong. I still get up to 28 MPG Hwy and that's driving 10 over the limit including hills and passes. Only thing from being perfect is the AC blend actuator door is faulty (diag code 024) need to get behind stereo system and heat control panel...will get that done when I buy the special stereo pulling tool from the parts store ($6) and the new blend door ($32)
whens the last time you did a tune up? maybe mass air flow sensor is dirty or fouled up throttle body
