When you put the car in reverse the third brake light comes on not the reverse lights, what might the problem be??

Sounds like a wiring issue. Your reverse light and its circuit are independent of the third brake light. Could be a short somewhere. Need to get a good wiring schematic and trace wiring.
Turns out it was a simple fix. On the top left of the hatchback pull the rubber boot back from the car body to expose the wires inside. http://home.comcast.net/~WSGilcrest/taurus/2.jpg If you see broken wires there, continue removing the hatchback plastic body panels and undo several plastic clips holding the wiring harness. (I had to remove all this to give me enough slack to expose the broken wires.) http://home.comcast.net/~WSGilcrest/taurus/3.jpg In my case I had several broken wires, backup lights, third brake light, window defroster and left speaker, that I repaired with shrinkrapped butt connectors. http://home.comcast.net/~WSGilcrest/taurus/4.jpg Take care when reassembling if you have to thread several butt connectors into the small rubber boot. I wish I had enough length to stagger the butt connectors, but didn't have enough wire slack to play with. http://home.comcast.net/~WSGilcrest/taurus/1.jpg
I just discovered the same problem with my '96 Taurus Wagon. Darndest thing I've ever seen. Has the poster found a resolution? If I figure it out, I'll post back.
