the brake light has many functions. when the brake fluid is low, a sensor will turn on the light. when there is a hydraulic problem, the light will go on. when the hand brake switch is bad, it will light up. and finally, a abs malfunction will turn it on. Roy
Make sure emergency break pedal is retracted all the way, low fluid or master cylinder could be bad. It could be a serious problem like leaking out of a rusted rotted brake line. It is usually mechanical or hydraulic if it was a ABS sensor bad, it would light up the ABS warning light. It sounds electrical to me and if your brake lights stay on or don't work on the car, it is the switch on the pedal.
