With a DOHC Engine, engine must be removed to replace the engine oil pump?

engine oil light come on and goes off, when it comes on I hear a ticking noise, when the oil light goes off the ticking stops, it just started doing this in cold weather. With it being intermittent we have stopped driving it. I had it towed to my mechanic, he thinks it is the oil pump, but says he has to remove the engine to replace the oil pump. Does this sound correct, he says it is because I have a Dual Overhead Cam engine. I don't want to take the engine out of the car unless it is absolutely required.

Removal 1. Remove the timing drive components. 2. Remove the oil pump screen cover and tube. 3. Remove the damper bolt and the crankshaft sprocket. 4. Remove the bolts in the indicated sequence and remove the oil pump. Installation 1. Position the oil pump and install the bolts in the sequence shown. 2. Install the crankshaft sprocket. 3. Install the oil pump screen cover and tube. 4. Install the timing drive components. The simple answer is no, the motor does not have to be removed. It pays 10.4 hours in labor. add on gaskets, pump and fluids Roy
