The linkage in Fords for the column shift sometimes loosens. This will either cause starting problems as you describe or not be able to put your car in park at all (it just rolls). Simple solution. 5/16 allen wrench to tighten the 2 or 3 screws that connect your lever to the trans. Under your dash (use a flashlight) way up, look when wiggling the gear shift, you should see where the parts connect. There will be a brass looking plate that has 2 or 3 allen head screws that are facing the front of the car. It's hard getting your hand and wrench up there but you will find these loose. Tighten as tight as you can because you can't put locktite on them like the factory did unless you want to take them out one at a time. This is not a permanent fix as they loosen every once in awhile. Give a thumbs up if this was your solution.
