I have a 2001 Ford Tauras SES, 43,000, Engine "outline light" on dashboard stays on..It's been 3 wks....Tried tightening gas cap, light still on...Filled up with fuel...drove around, light still on...My son checked all the necessary liquids under hood..light still on...Manual seems to suggest emission...It appears there are 8 different types..Do you have an idea what the problem is and the cost of repair with a reliable, honest mechanic in my area...Much appreciated..Thank You, Marilyn

this is the check engine light. until you have someone use a scan tool to find out what codes are stored, there is no way to provide an estimate. a good local shop may charge you $75 to diagnose this problem and they can give you an estimate as well. once you know the codes, you can post them here and some meaningful advice.
I took my car to a reputable dealer and had it fixed. Cost of diagnosis is $117.The problem is with the OPFE system, ERG exhaust gas emissions. The part runs approx. $80 plus the diagnostic test...
