Engine suddenly hot

What is your question?

I have periodically smelled coolant throughthe vents, sometimes saw a vapor through the vents when a/c is one. Today, suddenly the a/c was not cold and the engine was hot, all the way to the red? It was hotter than usual today. I have a 1999 ford taurus station wagon.
