We have a 1998 Ford Ranger 4x4 4.0 V6 auto transmission. Suddenly began slipping gears progressivly worse. Any common problem to check other than complete overhaul?

Not really, unfortunately. Make sure that your fluid is topped off properly, but if that does not do it, then have a good transmission shop inspect it. Best of Luck!
We had the same problem with our 1998 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L, had the code come up with P0720 (Output Speed Sensor) Replaced the OSS with no luck! Replaced the ALTERNATOR and the BATTERY and problem solved!!! (so far). Will let you know if the problem returns.
